Garner Hall was built in Camanche Iowa in 1913. It was built on land donated by Martha Neesley who passed away on February 4th 1931. It was named by Mrs. Neesley after her deceased daughter May Garner Neesley. The building was the original town hall and was used for meetings, suppers, concerts, a play stage, and a movie theater. The town fire trucks used to be stored in the basement and when the bucket brigade was in need, they would ring the church bells.
Many groups used the building as a meeting hall including:
Chamber of Commerce
The building currently is managed by the City of Camanche. It can be rented for a donation and is used for meetings, parties, and reunions. The basement now serves as a senior meal site. The City of Camanche plans on demolish Garner Hall in the near future and build a new community center on the property.
Garner Hall Investigation Camanche IA November 7th 2015
By Sally Jacobs December 9th 2015
Background and Reported Activity
A member of MVP contacted Camanche City Hall to request permission to investigate Garner Hall as it is going to be demolished and replaced with a new community center in the near future. There was a report from a team members’ child that he saw a shadow figure in the building a few years ago.
The temperature upon arrival was 32 degrees with clear skies. The moon phase was waning crescent.
MVP arrived at Garner Hall at 5PM with members Becky Reid, Bryce Carlson, Diana Smith, Sally Jacobs, Amanda Peters, and Tony Caudill in attendance. We had a meeting about best equipment placement and a discussion about best investigation practices for the location. The investigation commenced around 6PM.
The Command Center was set up in the upstairs kitchen, with Bryce doing data entry and time keeping. In the building there were 6 audio recorders, 3 e.m.f. detectors, a high 8 night shot video camera, and a 4 camera night vision DVR system.
Sally drove around the building with headlights on to induce shadow play from light through the windows.
Upstairs Main Room
Becky, Diana, and Sally noticed random K2 and EMF meter activity during casual conversation. Becky saw a flashing light on the monitor from the camera in the basement level that was played back for Bryce, Amanda, and Sally. The anomaly was unexplained. Sally and Tony both noticed small flashes of light along the north wall of the main room; some traveling up the stairs to the kitchen area.
Audio clips captured on two different recording devices of a voice not belonging to any investigators. Video clip of the camera image completely blocked out, anomaly could not be explained.
MVP went into this investigation with no expectations; just the honor of investigating one of the city’s oldest properties. We are thankful to the City of Camanche for letting us conduct the investigation.
With the lack of activity and little evidence collected at this location it does not warrant an additional investigation.
